The
Swine Liquid Feeding Association (SLFA) was formed in 2001 by a group
of pork industry stakeholders to promote liquid feeding technology
and research within the Ontario pork industry.
The directors of the SLFA represent a cross-section of pork producers
and industry personnel. The current executive consists of thirteen
directors, seven pork producers and six industry representatives,
that have a keen interest in liquid feeding. The mandate of the
SLFA is to facilitate the transfer of current information and future
developments in swine liquid feeding technology to those interested
in pork production.
While European technology has been extensively adopted for swine
liquid feeding systems, more information is still required to address
local issues that are perhaps unique to Ontario. These include
the use of high moisture corn, the availability and value of co-products,
animal health and safety issues, regulations governing use of co-products
and standard operating procedures.
The objectives of the SLFA are:
1.
To identify and transfer present and future liquid feed technology
for swine.
2. To enhance pork quality.
3. To develop liquid feeding standards and protocols.
4. To explore alternative feedstuffs.
The current general understanding under which the SLFA works is
as follows:
- Currently working with the Univ. of Guelph to develop
research.
- Exploring the availability and use of co-products.
- Four executive
and two producer information meetings each year.
- Producer benefits
include:
- Improved herd health
- Significant cost savings
- Being informed of latest technology
- Products and trends
- Membership fee is $50 per producer per
year.
